A 56-year-old woman has died following a fall while walking in a remote mountainous area in Femés, within the municipality of Yaiza in Lanzarote, as reported by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).
The incident occurred shortly after 2:30pm yesterday (Friday), which is when the 1-1-2 emergency call centre received an alert requesting urgent assistance for a woman who had fallen in a remote mountain area. In response, CECOES immediately activated the necessary emergency resources.
Mountain Rescue personnel, the fire brigade, an SUC ambulance, the Guardia Civil and Local Police were dispatched to the location given. When firefighters reached the victim, who was in a difficult-to-access location, they verified that she was in cardiorespiratory arrest and began resuscitation manoeuvres.
When paramedics were able to treat the woman, they confirmed that she was still in cardiorespiratory arrest despite their efforts, and continued performing both basic and advanced CPR manoeuvres to try and revive her. Unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Guardia Civil initiated the necessary proceedings and guarded the body until there was judicial authority given to remove it for an autopsy.
This tragic event highlights the inherent dangers in mountainous regions and emphasises the importance of emergency response readiness in such challenging environments.
