Beachgoers at Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife, were surprised on Friday when a shark appeared right at the water’s edge.

Several bathers filmed the unusual sight and quickly shared the footage. In some videos, people can be seen attempting to push the animal back into deeper water, with one person even flipping it onto its back.

Experts explain that when a shark is turned upside down, it can enter a state known as tonic immobility — a temporary paralysis triggered by this position. While some people believe it helps to calm the animal, it can actually increase stress levels and even make it more difficult for the shark to breathe if it is not quickly returned to its natural position.

At this stage, the exact species of the shark has not been confirmed, although it is believed to have been a Mako. However, around 25 different species are known to inhabit the waters surrounding the Canary Islands, and sightings closer to the coast are becoming increasingly common.

Fortunately, no incidents were reported and there was no risk to swimmers.
