A holidaymaker has been arrested at Gran Canaria Airport after allegedly leaving an all-inclusive hotel without paying a bill of almost €2,500.
The woman, whose nationality has not been disclosed, was detained before she could board a flight and leave the island with her family.
Police said the family, consisting of two adults and a child, had stayed for 11 nights at a hotel in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. They allegedly left without paying the €2,483 bill.
The booking was made through the hotel’s website using a bank card as a payment guarantee. However, when staff attempted to charge the full amount at the end of the stay, the payment could not be processed.
Hotel staff contacted the woman several times in an attempt to resolve the issue. She initially said she intended to pay but claimed she was already at the airport and was having difficulty accessing her bank card.
According to the complaint, she later stopped responding, and the bill remained unpaid. The hotel then reported the incident to the National Police.
Officers in Maspalomas worked with border police at Gran Canaria Airport to find the woman. She was arrested before boarding her flight and taken to Maspalomas police station.
After police enquiries were completed, she was brought before a court. The judicial authorities will now decide how the case proceeds.
