Man dies after being pulled from the sea at beach in Corralejo

A 60-year-old man has died after being rescued from the sea at Corralejo Viejo Beach in Fuerteventura, despite extensive efforts by lifeguards and emergency services to save his life.
According to the Canary Islands' Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES), the alarm was raised at 2:40pm yesterday, Friday 17th July, after the man was pulled unconscious from the water.
Lifeguards at Corralejo Viejo Beach were the first to begin treatment before being joined by a doctor and nurse from Corralejo Health Centre, along with personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC).
Rescuers carried out prolonged basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the beach, but despite their efforts, they were unable to revive the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Firefighters from La Oliva, Civil Protection volunteers, Local Police and the Guardia Civil also attended the incident.
The Guardia Civil has opened the usual judicial investigation and is handling the formal procedures following the man's death.
The circumstances surrounding how the man got into difficulty in the water have not been disclosed.
