Police have removed 71 electric scooters left on pavements, pedestrian areas and promenades across Tías during the past week. Most were found in the popular Lanzarote resort of Puerto del Carmen.

The scooters have been taken to a municipal storage facility while the council increases checks on rental companies operating in the area.

Tías Council said similar action had been taken in previous years following complaints from residents and a number of road accidents involving electric scooters.

Officials said the measures are intended to improve road safety, keep pavements accessible and prevent public spaces from being obstructed.

The council is preparing regulations that are expected to require rental operators to obtain licences, pay fees for using public areas and hold third-party liability insurance.

Rental scooters must also comply with national traffic rules. They should be limited to a maximum speed of 25 kilometres per hour, fitted with location tracking and equipped with systems to prevent them being left in unauthorised places.

Residents and visitors are advised to park electric scooters only in permitted areas and ensure they do not block pavements, entrances or pedestrian routes.
