A pizzeria in Candelaria has created a unique pizza inspired by the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands, and it has quickly gone viral on social media. Available for a limited time, the unusual creation combines local Canarian flavours with Italian ingredients and is designed to resemble the dome of a church.
The special pizza has been created by La Barchetta in Candelaria, one of Tenerife's most important religious towns. Every year, thousands of pilgrims and visitors travel there for the annual celebrations in honour of the Virgin of Candelaria, particularly during the main festivities in August.
The recipe blends traditional Canarian produce with classic Italian toppings. It features almogrote, a strong cheese spread from La Gomera, alongside mozzarella, rocket, capocollo and palm honey, creating a sweet and savoury combination that reflects both local and Italian culinary traditions.
What has attracted the most attention, however, is its presentation. A baked focaccia-style dome sits over the pizza, topped with a small bread cross, giving it the appearance of a church or shrine. As well as creating a striking visual effect, the dough cover helps keep the filling warm until it is served.
The pizza gained widespread attention after being featured by content creator Dudu Dog, who praised both its flavour and originality. Since then, images and videos of the dish have been widely shared online, making it one of Tenerife's latest viral food attractions.
The special edition pizza will only be available until 16th August, coinciding with the end of the main celebrations honouring the Virgin of Candelaria. Visitors hoping to try it will need to head to Candelaria before it disappears from the menu.
