Drivers on the GC-1 motorway in southern Gran Canaria were shocked to see a white BMW travelling at night with its rear bumper visibly hanging loose, creating a serious hazard on one of the island’s busiest roads.

The vehicle continued along the dual carriageway despite the bumper swinging dangerously and appearing at risk of detaching at any moment. With the incident happening at night, reduced visibility increased the danger for other drivers who may not have been able to react in time.

What might have seemed a bizarre sight to passers-by in fact posed a significant road safety risk. Had the bumper broken free, it could have caused a multi-vehicle accident or a serious collision.

The incident is considered an example of reckless and negligent driving. Spain’s traffic authority, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), has reminded drivers that circulating with damaged or loose structural parts is a serious offence. Offenders can face fines and, in the event of an accident, even criminal responsibility.

Authorities stress that ensuring vehicles are roadworthy is particularly important at night, when other drivers’ reaction times are shorter and the potential for accidents is much higher.
