A diver narrowly escaped being hit by a boat off La Caleta in Adeje after it passed dangerously close to his marker buoy.

Footage shared on social media shows the boat travelling at speed towards the buoy, which had been placed in the water to warn vessels of the diver’s position. Several people appeared to be on board at the time.

The diver can be heard shouting at the boat and questioning whether those on board had seen the buoy. He later expressed relief that the vessel had not passed directly over him.

The incident reportedly happened on Friday and has prompted calls for the diver to report it to the Guardia Civil. Social media users have also claimed that similar dangerous encounters happen more often than many people realise.

The close call comes after a 30-year-old diver was hit by a boat near Radazul in June. He suffered serious injuries and later had to have one of his legs amputated.

Boat operators travelling near the coast must remain alert for red or orange marker buoys indicating that a diver or underwater fisherman is nearby. Vessels may also display the international “A” flag to warn that divers are in the water.

Spanish maritime rescue authorities advise boats to remain at least 25 metres away from these warning signals. Anyone operating a vessel near popular diving areas should reduce speed, maintain a proper lookout and give marker buoys a wide berth.
