A 14-year-old boy has died after drowning in a cove in the south of Gran Canaria, according to reports from the Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES).
The incident happened yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, in the municipality of Mogán, in a cove located between Playa Amadores and Puerto Rico, two of the island’s most popular tourist areas.
CECOES received several calls at approximately 2:35pm, reporting that a person was in difficulty in the water, immediately launching an extensive emergency operation to locate the teenager, including resources from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES), Maritime Rescue, and Civil Protection.
Emergency teams subsequently located the 14-year-old under the water and recovered him from the sea, but sadly paramedics were unable to save him and could only confirm his death.
Guardia Civil investigating the incident
The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and officers carried out the necessary procedures at the scene.
No further details have currently been released regarding how the teenager got into difficulties or how long he had been in the water before being located.
The incident is another tragic reminder of the dangers posed by the sea around the Canary Islands, particularly in rocky coves and areas away from supervised beaches.
Visitors and residents are advised to take particular care when swimming outside designated bathing areas, check sea conditions before entering the water, and follow instructions from lifeguards and emergency services.
