Fuerteventura and Tenerife named the best holiday destinations as Canaries dominate UK travel rankings

The Canary Islands are proving increasingly difficult to beat for British holidaymakers looking for sunshine without the long-haul flight, with Fuerteventura and Tenerife taking the top two positions in TravelSupermarket's latest Holiday Hotlist.

Fuerteventura has climbed to number one in the September 2026 ranking, while Tenerife has moved into second place. Lanzarote also features prominently, rising to sixth.

The ranking is particularly relevant because it is based on what holidaymakers are actually searching for and comparing. TravelSupermarket analyses its most-searched destinations alongside factors including package prices, last-minute deals and the cost of spending money once visitors arrive.

And Fuerteventura appears to be having a moment. Searches for holidays to the island increased by more than 260%, helping propel it to the top of the table.

The average price of a Fuerteventura holiday departing during the next six months is currently calculated at £604 per person, while the average September getaway comes in even lower at £552 per person.

Tenerife is close behind. Its average holiday price is £622 per person, falling to £574 for September departures.

TravelSupermarket also found that Tenerife currently offers the cheapest average all-inclusive holidays in its analysis, while Fuerteventura ranks second.

Even the price of enjoying a drink while on holiday helped Fuerteventura's score, with the average local beer calculated at around £2.50.

British visitors remain crucial

The findings reinforce the extraordinary importance of the British market to the Canary Islands. Official figures from the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (ISTAC) show that 576,338 tourists arrived from the UK during July alone.

That means British visitors accounted for 37% of all tourists arriving in the archipelago during the month, comfortably making the UK the islands' largest overseas tourism market.

Overall, approximately 1.5 million tourists visited the Canary Islands during July, an increase of 2.7% compared with July 2025.

The September ranking also arrives at an important point in the British holiday calendar.

As temperatures begin falling across the UK and Ireland, the Canary Islands enter one of their most important competitive periods. Their combination of relatively short flight times, established package-holiday infrastructure and mild autumn and winter weather allows them to compete for travellers who might otherwise consider considerably longer journeys.

Fuerteventura's performance is particularly striking because it has overtaken destinations traditionally popular with British travellers, including Majorca, Rhodes and Turkey's Antalya region.

Gran Canaria is the notable Canary Islands absentee from September's top ten. TravelSupermarket says average prices there increased by 3% to £660 per person.

But overall, the latest figures send a clear message: when British holidaymakers are comparing where to find sunshine and value as summer ends, the Canary Islands remain firmly at the top of the list.
