The Guardia Civil have arrested a man in Lanzarote on suspicion of animal cruelty after a video showing a dog being repeatedly struck in the back of a pick-up truck was posted on social media.

The incident took place yesterday, Monday, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, with footage recorded by a witness proving crucial in helping police identify and locate the alleged offender.

The video shows the man repeatedly hitting the dog with an open hand while the animal is in the rear of a red pick-up truck.

He can also be seen pulling forcefully on the dog's lead before continuing to strike the animal around its head and back.

The dog's cries can reportedly be heard during the recording before the man gets into the vehicle and drives away.

Viral video helps police identify suspect

The footage was subsequently widely shared online, drawing attention to the incident and ultimately assisting the Guardia Civil with their investigation.

According to police, public cooperation and the circulation of the video were key to identifying and detaining the man.

The Guardia Civil subsequently arrested him in Lanzarote on suspicion of committing an animal cruelty offence.

After being questioned, the man was released but remains under investigation for alleged animal abuse. The case will now proceed through the appropriate judicial process.
