Firefighters carried out a dramatic rescue on Wednesday after a fire broke out in a residential property in El Sobradillo, a neighbourhood in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
When emergency services arrived at the scene, they found thick smoke pouring from the windows of the lower floors and two people trapped on an upper-floor balcony, unable to escape. They had sought refuge outside to avoid the dense smoke that was filling the interior.
Fire crews immediately deployed their extendable ladder to reach the balcony and bring both people to safety. Once rescued, they were handed over to paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) for medical evaluation. At this stage, their conditions have not been reported as serious.
Dog Also Saved
Following the rescue, firefighters entered the property to assess the extent of the fire and check for further dangers. During this inspection, they discovered a dog trapped inside. The animal was safely removed and reunited with its owners, highlighting the dedication of the emergency teams to ensure all lives, human and animal, were protected.
Extinguishing the Fire
Once all occupants were safe, crews focused on extinguishing the flames and ventilating the building to clear the heavy smoke that had spread throughout the property. The fire was brought under control, and no further injuries were reported.
Cause Under Investigation
The origin of the blaze has not yet been confirmed, and an investigation is expected to determine how the fire started. Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in homes, particularly in densely populated areas.
Emergency Services Reminder
Authorities regularly urge residents and property owners to ensure that smoke detectors are fitted and in good working order, and that escape routes are kept clear. Visitors staying in rental apartments are also advised to familiarise themselves with exits and emergency contacts upon arrival.
This latest incident once again underlines the professionalism and quick response of Tenerife’s emergency services. The coordinated efforts of firefighters, paramedics, and security services prevented what could have been a far more serious incident.
