The Occidental Jandía Playa hotel in Fuerteventura has defended its hygiene and safety record after intense criticism in the UK press over the death of a 70-year-old British holidaymaker, allegedly linked to salmonella poisoning.

The incident, which took place in October last year, saw the man and his 60-year-old wife both admitted to hospital during their stay on the island.

According to reports, the man spent four weeks in Fuerteventura’s hospital before dying from sepsis, which was followed by kidney failure. His wife also fell ill and was hospitalised for a week, but survived.

During an inquest at Rochdale Magistrates’ Court, it was concluded that the man, named Leslie, died from multiple organ failure caused by sepsis, which was triggered by a Salmonella infection. His widow claimed that the couple had eaten exclusively at the hotel’s buffet during their stay.

The story has attracted widespread coverage in the UK, appearing in major national outlets including The Mirror, Liverpool Echo, Manchester Evening News, and Daily Express, as well as international publications such as 7 News Australia.

In a statement published on Wednesday, 13th August, the Occidental Jandía Playa insisted it operates under “a strict food hygiene and safety protocol” and complies fully with all regulations. The hotel added: “We also hold certificates from the external audit company mentioned earlier, confirming that no Salmonella has been detected in the hotel in the last twelve months. These audits and controls reflect our ongoing commitment to the health and safety of our guests.”
