A 66-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the death of a man whose burnt body was discovered inside a van following a house fire in Ojos de Garza, in the municipality of Telde, Gran Canaria.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday (12th August), when a call to the National Police at around 2:00am reported a fire at a residential property by the GC-140.

Officers were the first to arrive at the scene, using fire extinguishers to tackle the flames before the fire brigade arrived to bring the blaze under control.

During the emergency response, several witnesses informed police that a van parked next to the burning house, which was also caught in the flames, was regularly used by a 67-year-old man to sleep in. Tragically, he was inside the vehicle at the time of the fire and died during the incident.

Witnesses also told officers that earlier in the day, there had been disputes with a female neighbour who had allegedly threatened to set fire to some belongings stored nearby.

As a result, the woman was detained as the suspected perpetrator of both the fire and the man’s death. Investigators will now determine whether the death was the result of deliberate (homicide) or negligent actions. The investigation is ongoing.
