Wind turbine collapses in Lanzarote leaving thousands with no electricity

Several areas of Lanzarote have been left without electricity this morning (Tuesday), after a wind turbine at the Montaña Mina wind farm collapsed and fell onto nearby high voltage power lines causing a power outage, according to sources from the Lanzarote Emergency Services.

The wind turbine that collapsed, which has been out of service for some time and at risk of falling over, finally gave way due to the strong winds over the past few days on the island, which caused part of the structure to fall onto the power lines, breaking part of the cabling.

Endesa was alerted straight away to take urgent measures to restore the electricity supply as quickly as possible during today.

The accident has also affected part of the equipment that enables the distribution of TV and radio signals, although measures have been taken to find alternatives.

The Local police in San Bartolome have closed the access to the area, and firefighters are on hand to supervise the removal of the damaged equipment.
