A dramatic arson incident unfolded yesterday in Lanzarote yesterday when a man set fire to a home on Calle Luis Braille in Arrecife, with his mother still inside.
The Emergency Services responded quickly to the alert, arriving to find the second floor of the residence engulfed in flames. They were informed that a female and two butane gas cylinders were inside the building.
Upon gaining entry, firefighters immediately rescued the woman who was trapped inside. The fire was quickly located in one of the bedrooms and extinguished, before, they ventilated the house with a special electric fan to clear the smoke.
In the aftermath of the fire, the National Police conducted a thorough inspection of the property with family members, and found two machetes in the son's room.
Sources close to Lancelot Digital reported that the suspect, who is believed to struggle with drug addiction, had threatened his mother with a machete after an argument about money before setting the house on fire. The son was subsequently apprehended by the police and is facing various charges including attempted murder.
The incident highlights the critical role of the emergency services in ensuring public safety, and the ongoing challenges posed by substance abuse and domestic violence. The police are continuing to investigate the case.
