A breakdown at one of Lanzarote’s desalination plants, specifically Lanzarote IV, has left 17 towns without domestic water supply. The incident occurred on Saturday morning, affecting several locations across the island.
The areas impacted include Ye, Órzola, Tabayesco, Mala, Tías, San Bartolomé, Villa, Muñique, Tegoyo, Uga, Yaiza, Tao, Soo, Teseguite, and Los Valles.
According to sources close to Canal Gestión, the water service began to be restored this morning at around 10:00am. The company also reminded residents and businesses that they are required to have water reserves to last at least 48 hours in case of such emergencies.
Frequent water shortages have caused frustration, particularly in the northern parts of the island, where the lack of water is a recurring issue. These supply problems are a longstanding challenge, exacerbated by the ageing infrastructure that results in over 55% of water being lost through leaks in the network.
This incident highlights the ongoing difficulties Lanzarote faces with water distribution, highlighting the urgent need for system upgrades.
