Weekend forecast and the end of weather warnings in the Canary Islands

Weekend forecast and the end of weather warnings in the Canary Islands

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has announced that following several days of adverse weather conditions in the Canary Islands, the warnings for wind and coastal phenomena should end at 11:59pm tonight, Saturday 1st February.

They are forecasting that weather conditions are expected to improve across the archipelago, particularly tomorrow Sunday.

Weather Warnings

Trade winds will continue to blow strongly today (Saturday), with maximum gusts of up to 80 km/h in La Gomera, and potentially reaching 90 km/h in exposed areas.

Gusts of 70 km/h are also expected in the peaks and southeastern and northwestern slopes of Gran Canaria, La Palma, El Hierro, and Tenerife, as well as in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, albeit with a lower risk.

The maritime warnings remain active, with northeastern winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) and combined seas generating waves of 4 to 5 metres in the waters of Lanzarote and, occasionally, Fuerteventura.

These conditions also affect the eastern, southern, and western coasts of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, though the situation is expected to improve by Saturday.

WEEKEND WEATHER FORECAST:

Saturday:

A gradual decrease in wind intensity and wave height is expected. While strong gusts may persist in high and exposed areas, their strength will diminish as the day progresses. The sea conditions will also ease, with waves decreasing to 2-3 metres and wind intensity reducing in the afternoon.

Cloud cover will be variable, with more persistent clouds in the northern areas of the higher islands, where occasional light rain is possible, particularly in Tenerife and La Palma. Temperatures will remain stable, with no significant changes anticipated.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: Partly cloudy skies clearing throughout the day. Northeastern winds with occasional strong gusts. Temperatures ranging from 17°C to 21°C.

Gran Canaria: Partly cloudy with clearer skies in the south. Possible light rain in the north during the morning. Strong northeastern winds in peaks and exposed areas. Temperatures ranging from 18°C to 20°C.

Tenerife: Cloudy in the north with possible light rain in the northeast. Partly cloudy elsewhere. Trade winds with strong gusts in exposed areas. Temperatures ranging from 17°C to 21°C.

La Gomera: Mostly clear in the south, with some cloud cover in the north. Strong gusts in high and exposed areas. Temperatures ranging from 17°C to 21°C.

La Palma: Cloudy in the east with possible light rain in the northeast. Partly cloudy elsewhere. Trade winds with occasional strong gusts in peaks and exposed zones. Temperatures ranging from 18°C to 20°C.

El Hierro: Partly cloudy with mostly clear skies in the south. Strong gusts in the southeast and northwest. Temperatures ranging from 12°C to 14°C.

Sunday:

From tomorrow, Sunday, AEMET does not foresee any significant meteorological phenomena in the Canary Islands. Wind speeds will continue to decrease, particularly in mountainous and coastal areas, leading to more stable maritime conditions.

Cloud cover will be variable, particularly in the northern parts of the mountainous islands, where occasional light rain remains possible.

Temperatures are expected to remain steady, with slight cooling at higher altitudes in Tenerife and La Palma. The trade winds will persist but with reduced intensity compared to previous days.

In summary, the weekend will bring a gradual improvement in weather conditions across the archipelago, with warnings for wind and coastal phenomena being lifted as Saturday progresses.
