The Canary Islands will experience a slight dip in general temperatures today, Wednesday, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). The fall will be more noticeable inland, but despite this, highs are still forecast to exceed 30°C in the southern and western midlands, with parts of Gran Canaria expected to reach 34°C.

Overall, skies will be mostly clear or slightly cloudy, with some cloud intervals in low-lying northern areas of the mountainous islands. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, occasionally strong in the interior of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as on the southeast and northwest slopes of the other islands. Some very strong gusts may occur overnight.

At sea, winds from the north or northeast will reach force 4 to 6, occasionally strengthening to 7. Conditions will bring moderate to rough seas, with a northerly or north-easterly swell of 1–2 metres.

Island Forecasts for Wednesday, 20th August:

LANZAROTE
Skies mainly clear, with occasional clouds in the northwest coast during the morning. Temperatures steady or slightly lower. Moderate northeast winds, with stronger intervals inland.
General temperature range of 22°C – 28°C

FUERTEVENTURA
Mostly clear skies. Slight drop in temperatures, though 30ºC could still be reached in the southern interior. Moderate northeast winds, with stronger gusts in inland areas, Jandía, and the west coast.
General temperature range of 21°C – 26°C

GRAN CANARIA
Clear skies with some cloud over the north coast, especially in the morning. Slight to moderate temperature drop inland, though 30°C is still likely in southern and western midlands, with local peaks up to 34°C. Moderate northeast winds, occasionally strong in the southeast and far west, easing slightly by midday. Variable light winds at the summit.
General temperature range of 22°C – 30°C

TENERIFE
Clear skies with some cloud along the north coast, especially in the morning. Slight to moderate temperature drop inland, though 30ºC could still be recorded locally in the south midlands and metropolitan area. Moderate northeast winds, occasionally strong on the southeast coast and far west, with very strong gusts possible overnight. Winds will ease later in the day. Moderate south-westerly winds in high areas.
General temperature range of 24°C – 30°C

Heat and Fire Risk Still a Concern

Despite the slight cooling, the Canaries remain under weather alerts. Gran Canaria continues at a yellow warning level for high temperatures, while La Gomera faces a yellow warning for strong winds.

Authorities also remain on high alert for wildfires. On Tuesday, the Canary Islands Government declared a forest fire risk warning across the archipelago. So far this summer, 51 deaths have been linked to heat-related causes in the region.
