A week-long road safety campaign by the Local Police in San Bartolomé de Tirajana has resulted in 350 drivers being fined for speeding, dozens of alcohol and drug-related offences, and legal action against a buggy excursion company for irregular practices.
The operation, carried out between the 4th and 10th August, coincided with the peak summer season in Maspalomas and other southern resorts, when traffic volumes rise sharply due to the influx of tourists.
Authorities said the campaign was part of a wider strategy to improve road safety for residents and visitors.
According to figures released by the cabildo, most of the 350 drivers caught speeding exceeded the limit by an average of 25 km/h. In some cases, drivers were clocked at more than double the permitted speed, such as in 40 km/h zones where offenders were travelling at over 80 km/h. These cases carry fines of up to €600 and a loss of six licence points.
The operation also identified 28 motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and two under the effects of drugs. In more serious cases, police filed court proceedings against three drivers for blowing alcohol levels above 0.65 mg/l, as well as against others caught driving without a licence or with licences that had been stripped of points. One further case of reckless driving was also reported.
Beyond private motorists, police also acted against transport companies. A buggy excursion business is facing legal proceedings for document falsification after officers discovered irregular number plate changes on two of its vehicles.
The same company was fined for operating two more vehicles without compulsory insurance.
In a separate case, a foreign national was reported for running an unauthorised car rental service using a Polish-registered vehicle.
Councillor for Security, José Carlos Álamo, praised the police effort, noting that the campaign has increased safety patrols on the main roads. He said more joint operations with other security services are planned.
The campaign also responded to growing complaints from residents about the nuisance caused by quads and buggies passing through residential zones, generating dust, noise, and safety risks. Álamo said inspections are underway and restrictions are being considered to address these long-standing concerns.
