The popular bathing area of El Bloque in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, located in Valleseco, has been closed to swimmers after the discovery of dead fish and waste in the water. The local council raised the red flag on Sunday, prohibiting access to the sea for health and safety reasons.
Although the solarium and promenade remain open to the public, swimming is not permitted until further notice. The decision was made after debris, including oil slicks and dead fish were spotted in the water on Friday.
The city’s Health Department has confirmed that water samples have been collected for analysis. Results are expected this week, and these will determine whether the beach can be reopened or whether the closure will be extended.
Authorities explained that the waste was brought in by the “mar de fondo” (ground swell), a recurring natural phenomenon in some coastal areas that periodically washes rubbish onto the shore. As a precaution, the council opted to close the bathing area until the water quality is declared safe.
Meanwhile, the neighbouring area of Los Charcos remains unaffected, with a green flag in place and the sea open to bathers.
El Bloque, also known locally as Acapulco, was officially opened to the public in February 2023 following redevelopment by the Port Authority and transfer to the Santa Cruz council. The new facility quickly became a popular bathing spot thanks to improved access, services, and leisure areas close to the city centre.
