The Department of Traffic (DGT) have always allowed drivers to have a 50% discount on fines for driving offences if it is paid within 20 days. However, with the introduction of new laws and updated sanctions, there are now certain fines that do not allow a 50% discount for prompt payment.
One of the most notable is for driving with a detector or a radar jammer in the vehicle. With the changes in the new Traffic Law, simply by carrying one around in your car you can be fined between 500 and 3,000 euros, which makes it one of the most expensive fines that Trafico issues.
There are also no discounts if you are fined for not producing driver’s identification, as it could be falsified after the event, and neither is being forced to pay a fine of 1,500 euros for not responding to a notification request from the DGT.
It is also important to note that you can be fined 500 euros for driving a car on public roads that has failed its ITV after the expiry date. However, in this case, if the fine is paid within the voluntary period of 20 days you may opt for the 50% reduction, but you waive your right to appeal. Also, the payment cannot be divided or deferred.
Other situations that don’t have a 50% discount include ‘causing damage to the road infrastructure’, which means both the road itself and the traffic signals and signs. Violation for this can also lead to a fine of up to 3,000 euros, and if repairs need to be made due to the damage caused, it will not be possible to appeal the sanction either.
