Government updates weather alerts in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands government, through its Directorate General of Emergencies, has updated its weather pre-alerts, maintaining the warning for dangerous coastal phenomena, which will remain in effect throughout the week.

This decision follows information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other sources, in accordance with the Canary Islands Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

Affected Areas

The warning applies to the northern and western coasts of La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, as well as the northern coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

  • Monday, 27th January: Wave heights are predicted to increase to 2.5 to 3.5 metres. Northeasterly winds will strengthen to force 4 to 5 (20–38 km/h). Sea conditions will range from moderate to rough, with a northwesterly swell of 2.5 to 3.5 metres. High tide will occur between 11:45 and 12:30.
  • Tuesday, 28th January: Wave heights are anticipated to reach 3 to 4 metres, with northeasterly winds at force 5 (29–38 km/h), and some areas experiencing force 6 (39–49 km/h). Conditions will range from rough to very rough, with a northwesterly swell of 3 to 4 metres. High tides are expected at 00:00–00:45 and 12:25–13:10.

Precautions

The government advises residents and visitors to exercise caution in the affected areas, particularly along the coastline, where adverse sea conditions may pose significant risks.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are prepared to implement additional measures if necessary.
