The Secretary General of the UGT, Francisco Bautista, has asked the Government of the Canary Islands to carry out screenings in neighbourhoods and beaches of Tenerife to make it easy for people to be tested rather than them going to health centres. He emphasized the importance of the tests to stop the spike in infections on the Island, after only 3% of people were tested lasted weekend, saying: " Why do people look at the screenings negatively? We need to do these tests to know our full position, know where we stand, and analyse the source of infections. We need to do this so we get out of this situation quicker!"
“We have to look for the asymptomatic that we haven’t detected, and unless we do something drastic, we will continue to fail again and again. Take the example of last weekend, when not even a fraction of the people who were summoned to health centres in La Cuesta, Tíncer and San Isidro attended. It is clear that if Mohammad does not go to the mountain, the mountain will have to go to Mohammad”, he said today (Tuesday) in an interview with COPE.
Bautista explained that the Canarian Health Service staff could set up tents in areas with the greatest influx of people: “If we have to we will set up on the sand and knock on people’s doors. The objective has to be that citizens get involved and this situation does not get further out of hand. Otherwise, we will see numbers that we have never had before in this health crisis, and extra restrictions will be implemented”.
“Without a national state of alarm and with the latest pronouncement of the Canary Islands High Court of Justice for hospitality, Level 4 would be the only option left to the Government for Tenerife, until incidence rates get so high an emergency state of alarm would be permitted to be requested,” said the Secretary General, referring to the rise in infections in Tenerife. “If people don’t understand how important the screening is, they need to very quickly,” he concluded.
This is the first time that Level 4 has been mentioned by someone in authority regarding the current situation in Tenerife. The 15 day period since the island started Level 3 finishes tomorrow.
