The Tenerife Cabildo has started renovation works on the TF-28 road by the La Centinela viewpoint in the municipality of Arona. The project has an investment of €1.6 million and is expected to be completed within five months.
The work focuses primarily on resurfacing and improving the condition of the road between La Camella and Valle de San Lorenzo, and will also include upgrades to the embankments and roadside drainage channels.
According to the Cabildo, it is being carried out in conjunction with the Arona Council, which had expressed concerns regarding the impact on traditional events held along this stretch of road, such as local rallies and religious processions.
Dámaso Arteaga, the Island Councillor for Roads, expressed optimism about the timeline, stating, “We will continue working to ensure the works are completed by mid-August.”
This project forms part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing mobility and road safety across Tenerife’s island-wide road network. The Cabildo recently launched the tendering process for 38 road improvement projects. These include resurfacing, improved drainage, updated signage, installation of safety barriers, and stabilisation of slopes and embankments along various key routes.
In particular, efforts will focus on renewing essential road markings such as give way signs, lane dividers, directional arrows, and pedestrian crossings, many of which have become heavily worn. These markings are crucial for driver safety, especially at night when poor visibility increases the risk of accidents.
Among the most significant upcoming works is the renovation of a 24-kilometre stretch of the TF-1 motorway between Arico, Fasnia and Güímar. Valued at €30 million, this project will involve resurfacing the road, adding rumble strips along the edges, repainting road markings, and installing new safety barriers. This section of the TF-1 sees more than 50,000 vehicles pass through it each day.
