Spain’s online gambling market broke records in 2024, with total gross gaming revenue (GGR) soaring to €1.45 billion. This 17.6% year-on-year increase marks a new high for the country’s thriving digital gambling industry, as both online casinos and sports betting reported robust growth.
Fuelled by growing player demand and technological innovation, the casino vertical led the charge, with online slots emerging as the undisputed frontrunner. Their popularity stems from fast-paced gameplay, vibrant themes, and attractive rewards.
A key factor behind this growth is the widespread hunt for no deposit bonuses, which give players the chance to spin and win without financial commitment. Sports betting was another area that experienced a notable upswing. Total revenue from this vertical reached €608.9 million, growing 23.8% year-on-year, the highest growth rate among all segments. Live betting narrowly led with €285.1 million, closely trailed by pre-match betting at €284.7 million. Other bet types accounted for €32.3 million.
While poker remained a key component of Spain’s online gambling ecosystem, it experienced a downturn. Poker revenue fell 5% year-on-year to €100.1 million. Of this, €73.6 million came from tournaments and €26.4 million from cash games.
Conversely, bingo saw impressive growth, reaching €14.9 million — a 23.8% increase from 2023. Contests, however, recorded a sharp decline, contributing just €7,057, which represents a 98.5% drop.
One of the major drivers behind this growth was a substantial increase in marketing expenditure. Operators spent €526.3 million on marketing in 2024, up 30.4% from the previous year. Bonuses made up the largest portion at €261.5 million — a 30.8% rise — primarily due to the reintroduction of welcome bonuses following regulatory adjustments in April.
Spending on other marketing channels, including advertising, affiliate partnerships, and sponsorships, also rose significantly, helping to boost player engagement and acquisition. The heightened marketing activity coincided with a sharp increase in user engagement. The number of active players grew 21.7% to 1.9 million. Active accounts rose 26% to 3.8 million, while the average number of monthly active accounts increased by 23.5% to 1.4 million. New account creation saw an even more significant jump, with a 34.7% year-on-year increase, averaging nearly 152,000 new accounts per month.
