THURSDAY WEATHER: Light calima and temperatures reaching 34°C

The Spanish Met Office (AEMET) are forecasting light calima (haze caused by suspended dust) at higher altitudes across the Canary Islands today, Thursday, along with temperatures up to 34°C in inland areas of the mountainous islands.

Temperatures could even exceed 34°C in mid-altitude areas of the south and west of Gran Canaria, while parts of inland Tenerife and Fuerteventura could see highs of 30 to 32°C.

Generally, skies will be mostly clear or slightly cloudy, though cloudier conditions are expected in low-lying areas of the north of the mountainous islands, as well as in the north and west of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Very strong northeast winds are also forecast in low areas on the southeast and northwest slopes of the mountainous islands.

At sea, northerly or north-easterly winds of force 5 to 6 are expected, bringing rough seas and a north or northwest swell of between 1 and 2 metres.

Island forecasts for Thursday:

LANZAROTE:
Mostly clear or slightly cloudy skies, though cloudier in the north and west during the night and early morning. Light calima at high altitudes. Minimum temperatures will change little, while maximums will rise slightly, possibly moderately inland. Northeasterly winds, occasionally strong inland in the south, especially later in the day when very strong gusts cannot be ruled out.
General temperature range: 20°C (min) / 28°C (max)

FUERTEVENTURA:
Clear or slightly cloudy, with more cloud in the north, west and east during the early morning and late evening. Light calima at higher altitudes. Temperatures could reach 30 to 32°C in the southern interior. Northeasterly winds with strong intervals and occasional very strong gusts on the southern slopes of the Jandía massif, especially early and late in the day.
General temperature range: 19°C (min) / 28°C (max)

GRAN CANARIA:
Generally clear or slightly cloudy, though cloudier on northern coasts, especially at the start and end of the day. Light calima at mid-altitudes and in the highlands. Minimum temperatures stable on the coast, rising slightly to moderately inland. Temperatures may exceed 34°C in mid-altitude and high areas of the south and west. Northeasterly winds stronger in low-lying southeast and western areas, with very strong gusts likely, particularly overnight, and occasionally reaching mid-altitudes. Breezes will dominate the south. Light, variable winds in the highlands turning light to moderate easterly.
General temperature range: 20°C (min) / 27°C (max)

TENERIFE
Mostly clear skies, with more cloud in northern coastal areas and some mid- to high-level cloud over the central peaks. Light calima at mid-altitudes and in the highlands. Temperatures stable or rising slightly on the coast; maximums will climb slightly to moderately in mid-altitude and high areas, potentially reaching 30 to 32°C in the southern interior. Northeasterly winds with strong intervals and possible very strong gusts on the far west and southeast coast, especially at night. Breezes will prevail in the west. In the high central peaks, light southerly winds.
General temperature range: 20°C (min) / 29°C (max).
