The Tenerife Cabildo has confirmed the construction of 193 affordable homes for social housing across five municipalities on the island, representing an overall investment of nearly €39 million by 2028.
The project is being jointly funded, with the Cabildo contributing 42.89% and the Canary Islands Government, through the Institute of Housing (ICAVI), providing the remaining 57.11%.
Specifically, the new housing will be distributed as follows: 30 homes in Güímar, 27 in Los Realejos, 90 in San Miguel de Abona, 29 in El Rosario, and 17 in Santiago del Teide.
The initiative aims to address the growing demand for social and affordable housing across Tenerife, offering residents improved access to secure and reasonably priced homes.
This week, the governing council is expected to formally approve what the Vice President of the Cabildo, Lope Afonso, described as “the largest public housing contract in Tenerife’s history.” He emphasised that this project represents a milestone for housing policy on the island and is the most ambitious contract of the current administration in this sector.
The Councillor for Municipal Cooperation and Housing, Sonia Hernández, joined the Vice President in expressing her satisfaction at seeing “tangible results” from the various plans and programmes implemented over recent years. She highlighted that this investment reflects a clear commitment to providing residents with greater certainty and security in meeting their housing needs.
The project underlines Tenerife’s proactive approach to tackling housing challenges and promises to deliver meaningful improvements to local communities across the island over the coming years.
