5-year-old boy hospitalised after near-drowning in Costa Adeje hotel pool
Emergency services were called to an aparthotel in Costa Adeje this morning (Thursday) after a five-year-old boy suffered a near-drowning in the complex swimming pool.
The incident occurred just after 11:00am at a complex on Calle País Vasco (believed to be Laguna Park 2, but unconfirmed), according to the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).
The child, of Polish nationality, was rescued from the water, showing signs of drowning and was given immediate assistance by SUC medical personnel. At first assessment, his condition was described as moderate. He was stabilised at the scene and then transferred by ambulance to Hospiten Sur for further treatment.
Local Police officers, who were also present, took charge of the necessary reports.
A worrying trend across the islands
This incident is the latest in a series of recent drownings and near-drownings in the Canary Islands.
On Wednesday, a man was left in a serious condition after a near-drowning at a hotel pool on Avenida Krogager in Tinajo, Lanzarote. Lifeguards performed CPR until SUC paramedics arrived and continued advanced resuscitation before transferring him to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital.
Just two days earlier, on Monday, an 83-year-old man was rescued in critical condition from the natural pools in Bajamar, La Laguna (Tenerife). Lifeguards and SUC personnel worked together to revive him from a cardiac arrest before he was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of the Canary Islands.
Safety reminders for residents and visitors
Authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance in and around swimming pools and coastal bathing areas. With high visitor numbers during the summer months, tourists and residents alike are urged to exercise caution, supervise children closely, and respect safety signage at all times.
