Caravan flips and lands on protection barrier in Lanzarote

There was major disruption yesterday (Thursday) after a caravan flipped, overturned and landed on the protection barrier on the Barranco del Agua road, near the Lanzarote Caballo activity centre.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the accident caused significant traffic jams in both directions as authorities worked to remove the caravan and restore the flow of vehicles. Traffic officers from the Guardia Civil were quickly deployed to the scene to manage the situation and oversee the recovery operation.

This incident is the latest in a growing number of caravan-related accidents across the Canary Islands. As caravanning gains popularity among tourists and residents alike, the region’s roads, particularly narrow rural routes, are seeing increased congestion.

A notable portion of these accidents involve tourists unfamiliar with the local terrain and the demands of towing caravans on steep or winding roads. Common incidents include caravan detachment, overturning, and collisions with roadside infrastructure.

In response to the rising trend, authorities have been working to raise awareness about how to tow properly. Key safety messages include securing loads correctly, driving at appropriate speeds, and exercising extra caution on challenging stretches of road.
