VIDEO: Tourists recorded in reckless driving incident in Lanzarote

Police in Lanzarote are once again investigating reckless behaviour on the island's roads after two tourists were caught on camera leaning dangerously out of a moving vehicle.

The incident occurred yesterday, Sunday 20th April, near the village of Arrieta in the municipality of Haría, on a main road in the north of the island.

In the video, the holidaymakers are seen hanging half of their bodies out of the windows of a moving vehicle while filming themselves using a selfie stick.

This is not an isolated case. In September of last year, the Guardia Civil’s Traffic Division launched an investigation into a similar incident involving a 26-year-old driver, after a video showed three people leaning out of a moving car in the same manner.

The driver was formally informed that he was under investigation for alleged reckless driving, while the passengers were charged with administrative offences for failing to wear seat belts.

In another incident that same month, a tourist was filmed engaging in nearly identical behaviour, prompting renewed warnings from authorities.

Under Spanish law, reckless driving is considered a serious offence. According to the current Penal Code, it carries potential penalties of six months to two years in prison, along with a driving ban ranging from one to six years. In addition, under the General Traffic Regulations, failure to wear a seat belt correctly is punishable by a €200 fine.

Authorities are now working to identify the individuals involved in the latest incident, as concerns mount over the increasing frequency of such reckless stunts.
