The Canary Islands will end the Easter weekend under yellow weather warnings as strong winds and rough sea conditions are expected across several islands tomorrow, Sunday, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
These alerts come as part of a broader response to an incoming storm system affecting the region.
Moderate northeasterly winds will sweep across the archipelago, with strong gusts likely on the southeast and northwest slopes, as well as in the peaks and mid-altitude areas of the southern and western parts of the mountainous islands.
In some areas, especially La Gomera and Gran Canaria, wind gusts could exceed 70 kilometres per hour, prompting AEMET to issue yellow warnings earlier today. Similar alerts have been issued for coastal conditions around Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
In the higher-altitude northern regions, skies will be cloudy with the possibility of light, occasional rain in the mid-mountain ranges, particularly during the morning. The rest of the archipelago will see generally cloudy conditions. Temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable.
At sea, the weather will be especially severe. Northeasterly winds are forecast to reach speeds of up to 61 kilometres per hour (force 7) on the southeastern coasts of Tenerife and the southeast and western shores of Gran Canaria.
Swells from the north or northwest could produce waves up to two metres high, making for rough or very rough sea conditions across much of the archipelago.
