The National Geographic Institute (IGN) have released details of 30 small earthquakes detected in the area of Las Cañadas del Teide between 9:01pm last night (Monday) and 4:32am this morning (Tuesday), 14 of which were detected southwest of Pico Viejo and northeast of Guía de Isora.
The magnitudes of the tremors are between 0.6 and 1.9 on the Richter scale at depths between 8 and 23 kilometres, the IGN has informed in an official press release.
The seismic activity from last night is located in an area with numerous microseismic activities detected on a regular basis, and don’t pose any risk to the population, and is within normal parameters in active volcanic areas, such as the island of Tenerife, specifies the IGN.
In fact, throughout the month of June, a total of 182 earthquakes have been detected in the Canary Islands, with a maximum magnitude of 3.3 on the Richter scale for the quake that occurred on the 12th at 7:10pm, 10 kilometres deep, with an epicentre located 150 kilometres northwest of Lanzarote.
On the 28th at 1:16am an earthquake was located to the west of the island of Fuerteventura, 35 kilometres from the coast, with a magnitude of 2.4 and a depth of 4 kilometres, which was felt with intensity II (EMS98) in the town of Pájara.
Activity has continued between the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, with 57 localized earthquakes, at depths between one and 35 kilometres and magnitudes between 0.3 and 2.1 mbLg.
In the interior of the island of Tenerife, seismic activity has continued, mainly in the areas near Icod de los Vinos, Vilaflor, Teide-Pico Viejo and Guía de Isora, with a total of 40 earthquakes located between magnitudes of 0.1 and 1.6 mbLg and depths between one and 28 kilometres.
The results obtained from the observations made by the Permanent GNSS Stations of the Canary Islands Volcanic Surveillance Network and through InSAR processing do not show any significant deformation that could be associated with volcanic activity.
