VIDEO: Man caught speeding on modified electric scooter along GC-1 motorway

A man has been caught on video riding an electric scooter at high speed along the GC-1 motorway in Gran Canaria, the busiest road. The footage, widely circulated on social media, shows the man weaving between cars near San Cristóbal with no helmet on, on a road he is not allowed to ride on, in a dangerous and illegal act that has sparked concern among authorities and road users.

The scooter, which appears to have been modified to increase its power, was seen keeping pace with surrounding vehicles, something only possible with significant alterations, given the limitations of standard electric scooters. Such behaviour not only breaks traffic regulations but also places the rider and others at serious risk.

The GC-1 is the major thoroughfare in Gran Canaria, with a minimum speed limit of 60 km/h, making it completely unsuitable, and illegal, for scooters and other personal mobility vehicles (PMVs). These modes of transport are only permitted in urban environments and designated cycling or scooter lanes.

Authorities have reiterated that riding electric scooters on motorways, expressways, or high-speed roads is strictly prohibited under Spanish traffic laws. Violations can result in substantial fines and further penalties, especially in cases where modifications or reckless behaviour are involved.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by irresponsible use of personal mobility vehicles and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. Officials have warned that enforcement will continue to intensify as such behaviour becomes more common on Canary Islands roads.
