Tenerife and Gran Canaria ensure free public transport despite setback in congress

The islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria have reaffirmed their commitment to providing free public transport, even after the Spanish Congress voted against the decree that would have guaranteed state funding for the initiative.

The veto, backed by the Popular Party (PP), Vox, Junts, and UPN, has left local authorities seeking alternative ways to sustain the popular measure.

Rosa Dávila, President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, issued a message of reassurance to residents, confirming that buses and trams will remain free on the island. She stressed that, despite the national political setback, the Cabildo is determined to find financial solutions to continue supporting this transformative mobility initiative.

Similarly, Teodoro Sosa, Councillor for Presidency and Sustainable Mobility of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria guaranteed the continuity of free public transport in Gran Canaria. He noted that while the rejected decree affects the mechanism for distributing funds, the General State Budget (PGE) includes allocations for this purpose. In the interim, the Cabildo will prefinance the service to ensure it remains accessible to residents.

Impact of Free Transport

The decision to uphold free public transport comes in response to a significant increase in ridership since the policy was introduced. In Tenerife, passenger numbers have risen by 40%, highlighting the success of the initiative in promoting sustainable and accessible mobility on the island.

Both islands have highlighted the measure’s role in easing financial pressures on families and reducing reliance on private vehicles, contributing to environmental sustainability.

SEEKING LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS

The cabildos are working closely with the Canary Islands government to resolve funding challenges and ensure the long-term viability of free public transport. The continued collaboration aims to maintain the benefits of this policy, which has become a cornerstone of mobility and sustainability efforts in the Canary Islands.

For now, residents of Tenerife and Gran Canaria can rely on free buses and trams as authorities navigate the complexities of securing financial support for this widely appreciated initiative.
