A 65-year-old German hiker suffering from mild hypothermia was rescued by helicopter this morning (Saturday) after becoming stranded on a rugged section of a trail connecting Isora to the beaches in Valverde, El Hierro.
According to reports from the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES), they received an alert at 6:15pm yesterday afternoon (Friday) from a German woman who had strayed from the marked path and reached a point where she was unable to continue on her own.
In response, the designated emergency intervention team from the Cabildo de El Hierro was activated. Upon arrival, they assessed the situation and determined that access by land was too difficult.
However, due to the lack of daylight, a helicopter rescue was postponed until this morning, and she had to spend the night on the mountain. At first light, rescue teams successfully reached her by helicopter and airlifted her to a helipad where she was met by an ambulance and taken to the Frontera Health Centre for treatment.
