VIDEO: Two people caught burgling a house in Tenerife that was empty because of the fire

The National Police and the Guardia Civil have arrested two people, a 35-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man, for breaking into and burgling a house in the Benijos neighbourhood of La Orotava, which was empty as it had been evacuated a few days earlier because of the fire in Tenerife.

The incident took place this morning (Tuesday) when agents from both police forces were carrying out coordinated patrols in the areas of evicted homes caused by forest fire, and they received an alert informing them that a possible robbery was taking place.

The National Police immediately went to the location given and found that the door of the house had been forced open. Going inside they surprised a man and a woman who were going through the owner’s belongings before fleeing.

Officers managed to detain the woman but the man got away, and they found that she had clothing, two watches, and some jewellery, which the owner has since identified as hers, in her possession.

Following this, the Guardia Civil carried out an intense search throughout the municipality of La Orotava today, to locate the man involved in the robbery, which they managed to do in the same district, Benijos, and immediately arrested him.

After interviewing both detainees, police learnt that they are both cousins of the victims, and had taken advantage of their evacuation from the property to force the lock and gain access to it to burgle it.
