Driver arrested in Fuerteventura for speeding and driving under the influence of drugs

A driver is under investigation by the Guardia Civil in Fuerteventura after being caught driving at more than twice the legal speed limit while under the influence of drugs. The incident occurred last Monday (7th April) as part of a speed monitoring campaign conducted by the DGT.

At approximately 740:pm, officers detected a vehicle travelling at 151 kilometres per hour on the FV-2 road, at kilometre marker 16, even though the stretch of road in question is clearly signposted with a maximum speed limit of 60 km/h.

After stopping the vehicle, officers observed signs suggesting the driver may have been under the influence of intoxicating substances. A drug test confirmed the presence of both cannabis and amphetamines in the Uruguayan driver’s system.

The Guardia Civil have initiated legal proceedings against the driver for two alleged offences under articles 379.1 and 379.2 of the Spanish Penal Code, which relate to endangering road safety. The case has been submitted to the Court of Instruction number five in Puerto del Rosario.

If found guilty, he could face penalties including a prison sentence of three to six months plus a fine, or community service ranging from thirty-one to ninety days. In addition to these penalties, a driving ban of one to four years may also be imposed.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and substance use behind the wheel, as authorities continue their efforts to improve road safety across the Canary Islands.
