Petition launched to bring TikTok Shop to the Canary Islands

A petition has been launched calling on TikTok to give Canary Islands residents and businesses access to TikTok Shop on the same terms as the rest of Spain.

The campaign says more than 2.2 million island residents are currently unable to buy products through the service. Canary Islands creators, self-employed workers and companies are also prevented from opening online shops and selling directly through the platform.

Digital transformation and artificial intelligence adviser Carmen Martín Robledo launched the petition. It is addressed to TikTok’s Spanish and European operations, as well as Spain’s Ministry for Digital Transformation.

TikTok Shop allows businesses to promote and sell products, with customers completing payments without leaving the app. The petition argues that excluding Canary Islands postcodes places local companies at a disadvantage.

The main obstacle is believed to be the Canary Islands’ separate tax and customs system. Goods transported between the islands and mainland Spain may require additional import or export declarations, while the archipelago applies its own indirect tax instead of mainland value-added tax.

Campaigners say these arrangements should not justify excluding the islands. They point out that other online retailers and delivery companies have adapted their systems to comply with the Canary Islands’ tax and customs requirements.

The petition asks TikTok to introduce a suitable payment and delivery system capable of managing local taxation and customs procedures.

It also proposes a dedicated marketplace for the archipelago. This would initially allow Canary Islands businesses and creators to sell directly to customers on the islands without relying on deliveries to or from mainland Spain.

Local traders could advertise products through videos and live broadcasts before completing sales within TikTok Shop. Supporters say this could boost local commerce and help small brands benefit from the growth of shopping through social media.

The campaign also claims TikTok restricts or penalises links to external sales services. Some Canary Islands businesses have used the platform to advertise products before directing customers elsewhere to place their orders manually.

Campaigners are asking TikTok not to limit these external options while its own shopping service remains unavailable in the islands.

The petition is open to support from consumers, businesses, online retailers, marketing professionals and content creators who want TikTok Shop extended to the Canary Islands.
