Eight injured in six-vehicle crash on GC-1 motorway in Gran Canaria

Eight people were injured in a serious crash involving six vehicles on the GC-1 motorway in the south of Gran Canaria near El Salobre on yesterday morning (Friday August 7th), on the carriageway heading towards Las Palmas, causing significant disruption to traffic in the area.

The emergency services were alerted to the accident at 7:50am, according to the Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES), who immediately dispatched Guardia Civil, firefighters, ambulance crews, Civil Protection and road maintenance teams to the location given.

One of the cars involved caught fire following the collision, while firefighters had to cut another casualty free from a vehicle before they could be treated by medical personnel.

Traffic diverted following crash

Due to the scale of the accident, the Guardia Civil diverted traffic via El Pajar towards the GC-50.

The Cabildo de Gran Canaria also confirmed that the slip road joining the GC-1 from Arguineguín towards Las Palmas was temporarily closed as emergency crews dealt with the incident.

Eight people injured

The eight casualties suffered injuries of varying severity.

  • A 75-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man sustained multiple injuries classed as moderate, while a 47-year-old woman suffered a minor chest injury.
  • A 91-year-old woman sustained a moderate leg injury.
  • A 39-year-old man and another woman, whose age has not been disclosed, were both treated for moderate neck pain.
  • A 55-year-old man suffered moderate multiple injuries and had to be freed from his vehicle by firefighters.
  • The eighth casualty, a 64-year-old man, suffered moderate neck and chest injuries.

Emergency medical teams treated those affected following the collision before arranging the necessary transfers for further medical attention.

The Guardia Civil is responsible for the official accident report and investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
