The Canary Islands Government is ending its heat alert this morning (Monday10th August) after several days of high temperatures across parts of the Archipelago.

The Directorate General of Emergencies confirmed that the alert will be officially lifted from 8:00am today, as temperatures begin to ease following the recent heatwave.

The measure applies to El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma, as well as southern parts of Tenerife. In Gran Canaria, the heat alert will be lifted for areas above 400 metres altitude.

The decision marks the end of the latest period of exceptionally high temperatures, which has affected several islands and prompted authorities to introduce additional precautions due to the increased risk posed by the heat.

Forest fire risk remains

However, officials have stressed that the end of the heat alert does not mean that the danger of forest fires has disappeared.

The Canary Islands Government is maintaining its pre-alert for forest fire risk, as conditions in some areas remain favourable for fires to start and spread.

Residents and visitors are therefore being urged to continue following official safety advice and to take particular care in rural and forested areas.

Authorities are also asking people to avoid any activity that could accidentally cause a fire, particularly while vegetation remains extremely dry following the prolonged period of high temperatures.

Although temperatures are now expected to become more manageable, forest fire prevention remains a priority across the islands as the Canary Islands continue through the hottest part of the summer.
