Uber will be allowed one license for every 30 taxis in Tenerife

Yesterday, Thursday, Uber starting operating its prestige service, Uber black, in the south of Tenerife with a fleet of 30 luxury chauffeur driven vehicles, in the municipalities of Guía de Isora, Adeje, Arona, and Granadilla de Abona, including the Tenerife south airport, before offering ‘normal’ taxi services.

The Ministry of Transport for the has informed the seven cabildo’s in the Canary Islands that there is a limit in place of how many VTC licences they will issue Uber for ‘transport vehicles with drivers’, which is based on a ratio of one for every 30 taxis, which is in accordance with the Road Transport Regulation Law.

This means that Uber will be able to run its Prestige service, employ a regulated number of its own drivers, and then work in collaboration with existing taxi drivers, who they are offering incentives to for them to sign up to Uber, as well as working with their co-operatives.

Felipe Fernández Aramburu (pictured), general director of Spain and Portugal, reminds people that currently only the prestige service is available and that prices reflect that, but the service will expand and prices will come down very quickly.
