Say goodbye to our heroes of the sky!

The stabilisation of the perimeter of the fire and the unexpected rain last night, have allowed the withdrawal of the seaplanes and the military (UME) from Tenerife as their work battling the blaze is done, as reported this afternoon (Saturday) by the Directorate of the Canary Islands Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Attention due to Forest Fires (INFOCA).

Last night the rain we had in the north of the island have cooled the area and increased humidity, which has favoured extinguishing work today and there have been no significant reactivations reported.

The latest reconnaissance flights over the affected surface confirm that the perimeter remains stabilized, with some smoky spots and reactivations being detected inside, but only in the Mamio area of La Orotava and in the La Hornaca area of Tacoronte.

In the last ten days, more than 12 million litres of water have been discharged by the seaplanes and helicopters in 6,591 runs. Everyone who has taken part in the fight against the fire by land or air at day or night are heroes, but the skill and images of the 43 Squadron flying over Santa Cruz to refill with seawater in the harbour will forever be a symbol of this difficult time.

The evolution of the fire also means that the military troops who have been working on the front line supporting the firefighters and BRIFOR have been withdrawn, and can return to their various bases.

205 soldiers and 50 military vehicles were deployed by the Canary Islands Government which have all been key in beating the blaze and preventing it from being far worse than it has been.

From us all, sincere thanks, we salute you.
