Loro Parque has become the only zoo in the world to achieve a negative carbon footprint, as the Tenerife-based company leads the way in the fight against climate change. During a visit on Monday, the Minister of Ecological Transition and the Fight against Climate Change for the Canary Islands Government, José Antonio Valbuena, made a presentation to Loro Parque in recognition of this achievement.
In addition, Valbuena had the opportunity to visit the renewable energy facilities that the park has installed, through a guided tour where it was explained to him how they had achieved this milestone for the survival of the planet.
The councillor highlighted that “it is commendable how a company of such magnitude and international recognition in the tourism market is betting openly and clearly on renewable energy, water management, and the reduction of greenhouse gases.”
ONE OF THE PIONEERS IN RENEWABLE ENERGY.
Loro Parque consumes 100% sustainable energy, with non-polluting energy installations both inside and outside the zoo, and its objective is that the negative carbon footprint is achieved in the rest of their group of companies.
In addition, the animal embassy has spent years promoting plans to eliminate the use of single-use plastics and has an innovative water management system. For this reason, they have received numerous environmental certifications, awards, and recognitions.
For example, Loro Parque has the EMAS certification, the official environmental audit tool of the European Union, and has been recognised for its initiatives in the conservation of global biodiversity.
“Since our creation, we have developed a special sensitivity towards the care of our planet. The delicate situation that animals suffer in nature as a consequence of our actions has made us reaffirm the urgent need to get down to work to reverse all the damage we have done to the world”, said the founder and president of Loro Parque, Wolfgang Kiessling.
With this recognition, the Canary Islands Government values and recognizes those entities that make a significant contribution to the fight against climate change.
