Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix (The Joker) and nominee Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), who is also his wife, are heading to Tenerife to film a brand new movie called 'The Island’. Principal photography is scheduled to begin next month, and then shooting will start towards the end of the year when Phoenix has finished the second Joker film, he is currently making with Lady Gaga.
The film, directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, is a dramatic thriller based on a true story about an American couple who turn their back on civilisation to build their own private paradise on a deserted island.
Pawlikowski, who has also written the script, returns to the cinema after his success in 2018 with 'Cold War'. The film earned him the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival and an Oscar nomination in the same category, as well as two additional nominations in the categories of Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography.
'The Island' will be produced by Tanya Seghatchian and John Woodward for Apocalypso Pictures and Brightstar.
This won't be the first time that Phoenix and Mara have shared the big screen, as they've appeared together in movies like 'Her,' 'Mary Magdalene,' and 'Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot.'
According to the synopsis for The Island, the film “follows an attractive American couple in the 1930s who turn their back on civilization to build their own private paradise on a deserted island and live off the land. But after a millionaire passing by on his yacht inadvertently turns them into a tabloid newspaper sensation, a self-styled Countess arrives out of the blue with her two strange lovers with plans to take over the island and build a luxury hotel.
This larger-than-life European ‘countess’ and her entourage soon begin to threaten the Eden that the couple has built and battle lines are quickly drawn. Psychological warfare ensues as seduction and jealousy descend into sexual infidelity, betrayal, and eventually murder - at exactly the same time, nature itself turns against these island interlopers.”
The film promises to be a thrilling thriller packed with action and drama, with an impressive cast and an acclaimed director at the helm scheduled to be released in 2024.
