The Emergency Services have reported several incidents over the last two nights that have involved the rescue of some hikers and people trapped in their cars due to weather conditions in the vicinity of the Teide National Park.
People seem to get disgruntled when access roads are closed by the authorities, even though the Guardia Civil emphasize that this precaution is for public safety and is only taken when necessary.
The fire brigade have posted videos of the roads on social media showing how several cars were stranded due to sheet ice on the roads, and that they had to rescue some hikers who became lost and isolated due to the weather conditions.
Something similar happened with the previous snowfalls earlier this year in the Teide National Park, and also in El Roque de Los Muchachos on La Palma, which is why the Guardia Civil announced yesterday (Thursday) that agents from the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) will intensify surveillance services in the Teide National Park over the next few days whilst there is still snow and ice in the area.
Likewise, the Guardia Civil has issued a series of recommendations in case you choose to visit the summit to enjoy the snow, such as wearing the correct clothes and footwear (it’s very cold!), having some food and drink in the car in case you are stranded, and fully charged phones in case you need to contact for help.
