Bomb scare at Tenerife airport

Bomb scare at Tenerife airport

The National Police have arrested a 43-year-old man after he called their call centre on 091, warning them that a bomb had been planted at the Tenerife North airport.

The incident took place last Thursday when all flights were grounded as per the protocol for this type of emergency, and the National Police and bomb squad went to the airport to verify the veracity of the threat, which turned out to be false.

Following this, normal service was restored with minimal interruptions and delays, without having to evacuate the airport, and investigators set about identifying the person behind the call.

Following an investigation, a 43-year-old man was arrested in Santa Cruz de Tenerife earlier today by agents of the National Police and placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority awaiting trial.

The sentence for this type of hoax call about the placement of an explosive device, which leads to the mobilization of emergency services and waste of police time, is classed as a crime of public disorder that can be punished with prison terms of three months and one day up to one year plus a fine.
