The age group between 20 and 29 years old is the one that the least number of appointments to be vaccinated have been requested in the Canary Islands, since the Ministry of Health asked everyone of the age of 16 to register online from May 24th. At the same time, it is the age group that has been registering the most infections in recent weeks, both on the islands and in the rest of the country.
This was emphasized yesterday by the Ministry of Health, who have appealed to twenty-somethings to register through the miCitaPrevia app or online at www.canariassevacuna.com. According to health sources, this low level of requests is not an isolated phenomenon, it is occurring in other communities.
The coordinator of the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 in the Canary Islands, Begoña Reyero, said yesterday: “I want to give a message to the young population, to encourage them to be vaccinated because they have a fundamental role in controlling the pandemic. We need all of them, they are very important, without them we will not achieve herd immunity.”
“Please, to all young people, I ask that you make your appointment and get vaccinated as soon as possible, to help all of the Canaries to get out of this situation. They are a fundamental and necessary, very important link to continue to maintain the control of this disease."
At the moment this group, which is made up of 251,748 people on the islands, only has coverage with a dose of 6.65%, which is only 16,738 people between 20 and 29 years old that have been vaccinated in the archipelago. Reyero insists. “Vaccination in the Canary Islands is well advanced, but it is necessary to convey the immense importance of the young population attending their appointment to get vaccinated" she added.
The Canary Islands is one of the five areas that have advanced the vaccination of this age group, together with the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Navarra and Castilla-La Mancha.
The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, also asked the younger population to continue to observe security measures so as not to become infected. “It is the least vulnerable population, which does not mean that they will not get sick, enter a hospital, enter an ICU or even die. Dozens of people, under the age of 49 have been hospitalized, a dozen are in the ICU, and three have died. That is, they can end up in a hospital too. I ask young people for one last effort, maximum responsibility, to wear masks, and not to share glasses," he said.
