The council in Arucas, Gran Canaria, has imposed a €9,000 fine and ordered the immediate confiscation of two potentially dangerous dogs after several attacks in the Montaña de Cardones area sparked alarm among local residents.

According to the council’s Department of the Environment, police reports and neighbour complaints confirm at least three serious incidents in which the animals attacked other dogs.

In one particularly violent case, a dog of a dangerous breed bit another animal repeatedly, leaving it with serious injuries and endangering its owner, who tried to intervene. Witnesses claim the same dogs were involved in previous incidents, including attacks that resulted in the deaths of two other pets in the neighbourhood.

Investigations revealed multiple breaches of animal ownership regulations. The dogs were not licensed, microchipped, vaccinated, or registered, and were regularly seen in public without muzzles or proper safety measures.

Given the severity of the incidents and the danger posed to both people and animals, the council has ordered the immediate seizure of the two dogs. They will remain under custody while the sanctioning procedure is finalised.

The Ayuntamiento of Arucas reminded residents that keeping potentially dangerous dogs requires an administrative licence, civil liability insurance, registration with the municipal database, and strict compliance with safety rules, including the use of a muzzle and lead at all times in public spaces.

The council stressed its commitment to safeguarding public safety and animal welfare, warning that it will act firmly against irresponsible behaviour that threatens community wellbeing.
