A new regional animal shelter is set to open in Gran Canaria after the Mancomunidad de Municipios de las Medianías presented the plans for its construction. The project comes in response to rising demand for animal care in the area and as part of efforts to strengthen the island’s commitment to animal welfare.
The new shelter represents an investment of just over €4.1 million and has been designed by a specialist company to suit the island’s terrain.
It will cover a 1,600-square-metre plot and, due to the uneven landscape, will be built across six staggered levels that blend into the natural surroundings.
According to the Mancomunidad, the project is urgently needed to provide proper facilities for the housing, care, and rehabilitation of animals, especially dogs and cats, where demand is currently very high.
The design includes a natural water purification system at the lowest level of the site, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The shelter will only increase available space for dogs by 16% compared to current facilities, however, capacity for cats will grow by 144%, with the option to expand further in the future if needed.
The new shelter will be equipped with high-quality installations to support the rehabilitation and socialisation of animals, ensuring their well-being and improving their chances of adoption. Officials stress that the project is not only about this infrastructure, but also about building a more caring and responsible community that values animal welfare.
